H1N1 vaccine hopefuls turned away at Arbutus clinic

By MATT KIELTYKA, 24 HOURS

People desperately hoping for an H1N1 vaccination are being turned away from Vancouver's first clinic.

Hundreds of people have been lining up since early Monday morning at the H1N1 clinic in the Arbutus shopping centre.

The clinic, open from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., saw nurses treating hundreds of people, but not everyone was so lucky.

Burnaby resident Dennis King was one of the first people turned away at 11:25 a.m., despite arriving 20 minutes earlier.

"It's pathetic," an upset King said, standing at the back of a line that stretched out into the halls of the mall. "My wife and I came here from Burnaby and we're being turned away. It's not organized very well."

More clinics will be opening up across the Lower Mainland throughout the week.

The next one is at the Three Bridges health centre in downtown Vancouver from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Monday.
