Sport BC looks at education in light of scams

By BOB MACKIN

The province's umbrella organization for amateur sport could increase education to help its members avoid internal ripoffs.

"It's something were going to look into," said Sport B.C. marketing and communications director Bart Given.

Softball B.C. told its annual general meeting Saturday that the RCMP is investigating more than $400,000 that went missing.

An unnamed bookkeeper is suspected.

"We don't like to see that happen to anyone especially in times like this," Given said.

He said Sport B.C. doesn't have a handbook on preventing fraud in amateur sports, but it does offer financial seminars to help provincial sport organizations.

Former Richmond Youth Soccer Association chair and treasurer Debbie Judd is scheduled to be in court today on charges of theft, fraud and forgery for misappropriation of $180,000.
