The month of “Mo” is upon us.
Starting Sunday men in the Lower Mainland, across Canada and around the world, will start growing out their moustaches for “Movember,” a month-long campaign to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer research.
“The traction for this event, the third year in Canada is absolutely unbelievable,” said Mo-Bro Alan Bedingfield at a shave event outside the Vancouver Art Gallery to launch the campaign. “Last year we had 9,000 registrants overall. This year we already have 10,000 men ready to go and grow.”
Organizers expect to have 35,000 Canadian men on board in hopes of raising $8 million.
The drive’s popularity shows prostate cancer is making room among other mainstream medical causes such as breast cancer and leukemia. “It’s an opportunity to talk about something that is kind of a faux pas or you don’t usually think is awkward,” Bedingfield said. A gala to celebrate the brave men who will wear moustaches for good cause will be held near the end of the “Movember” at Fortune Sound Club.
Bedingfield said it shouldn’t be hard for men to find a date.
“Most girls don’t love it but when you tell them about the serious side behind it and they’re all for it.”
