One of the most extensive discussions on gang culture in B.C. will be held Tuesday at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Surrey campus.
The head of the RCMP’s Integrated Gang Task Force, the lead prosecutor in the “Surrey Six” slayings, the director of the Warrior Boyz documentary, educators and people who have lived through the gang lifestyle are all scheduled to attend a public forum hosted by the school tonight at 7 p.m.
“The main purpose is to stimulate dialogue between academics, partners and the community and examine gang violence,” said Dr. Gira Bhatt, the director of the CURA project, a federal funded study led by Kwantlen to come up with ways of keeping youth out of the gang lifestyle. “We are not looking for a quick solution, I don’t think there is one. But it’s about getting the community to be pro-active. This issue is not just for police or educators. Its an issue for all of us.”
The forum starts with a screening of Warrior Boyz.
