> HST burden

The upcoming Harmonized Sales Tax could deliver a $24 million blow to B.C.'s education system, according to an estimate from the B.C. Association of School Business Officials. NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston said the hit could be devastating, especially given the costs currently plaguing school boards through cuts, H1N1 and increased MSP premiums.

> Rix Honoured

Accolades and memories are flooding in from all corners of the province after one of B.C.'s biggest philanthropists, Dr. Donald Rix, died Friday. Rix, a member of both the Order of British Columbia and Order of Canada, donated millions to develop health research, education and care. Premier Gordon Campbell issued a statement calling him "a truly great British Columbian."

> Surrey stabbings

RCMP in Surrey had a busy Saturday night after attending two unrelated stabbings. At 11:30, police got a report of a banquet hall brawl at 8233 - 166th Street. A man was stabbed there, but the injuries were superficial. A shot was also fired into the ceiling. The second incident was at 5 a.m. in the 6100 block of 145A Street. RCMP say a male received a minor stab found and a family member was taken into custody.

COPE is hosting a public forum on Olympic security issues today at the Grandview Calvary Baptist Church at 7 p.m. Speakers include Libby Davies, Jenny Kwan and Shane Simpson and Coun. Ellen Woodsworth.
