The new and improved Coastview Apartments was unveiled yesterday after the low-income senior housing unit received a $1.6 million facelift.
The 33-unit building on E. 3rd Avenue, near Commercial Drive, has been operating for three decades now but it needed massive renovations and modernizations to remain a suitable option for seniors living with mental illness.
The provincial government pulled together with Vancouver Coastal Health, the City of Vancouver and Coast Mental Health to bring the building up to spec without displacing any of the tenants.
"I think this is a wonderful example of how we strengthen our communities," said Coun. Ellen Woodsworth at Coastview's ribbon cutting ceremony.
Jocelyn Watson, a resident at the building for 12 years, said she's grateful to be able to stay in the community she calls home.
"There are time when I'm not myself where it's good to know I'm in a safe environment," she said. "I'm very glad for the new improvements here."
