If you ask me, two of life's greatest pleasures are a good martini and a fresh shucked oyster.
With that in mind, last week, on what proved to be anything but a typical Tuesday, your devoted columnist found himself in a cruel dilemma. How was I to drink delectable Hendrick's gin at Opus' seven-year anniversary in Yaletown, shovel down oysters at Joe Fortes' Slurp & Swirl, and simultaneously celebrate the arts at the Absolut Vodka party atop Hotel Vancouver?
Easy. Bring a buddy that doesn't drink, tolerates waiting in an idling car, and eats his oysters with one hand on the steering wheel.
But all of this revelry comes with a good cause. Take for example last week's Wine on the Mountain event on Grouse. The evening raised $87,300 for the Adoptive Families Association of B.C. to help find a family for every child.
And looking ahead to the upcoming Ocean Wise Seafood Chowder ChowDown at the Vancouver Aquarium, guests will be able to enjoy chowder offerings with local beer as 10 chefs compete for the 2009 Ocean Wise Chowder Champion title in the name of sustainable seafood.
