$1.1M for potties, fireworks

By BOB MACKIN

Vancouver is putting more than $1.1 million down the drain and up in smoke at its Olympic party zones.

A staff report for Tuesday's city council meeting recommends approving $706,959 plus GST for Pit Stop Portable Toilet Services of New Westminster and $435,000 plus GST for Concept Fiatlux, a Montreal company that competed in the 2002, 2003 and 2005 Celebration of Light fireworks displays.

Staff also recommend $440,614 plus GST to Premier Global Productions for staging and rigging at the $18 million David Lam Park and Larwill Park live sites.

Meanwhile, the Vancouver Economic Development Commission is asking council for $375,000 to fund its January to March operations. VEDC is organizing the Nov. 9-announced Metro Vancouver Commerce trade and investment promotion.

Nine municipalities and the federal government are spending $1.5 million on Olympic tickets and hotels for 100 invited executives.
