Auction for homeless

By AMANDA OYE

Luxury car rentals, golf packages and helijet packages are being auctioned off Nov. 26 as a part of the fifth annual "Night of New Beginnings" Gala Fundraiser, hosted by TD Waterhouse Private Investment Advice.

The event kicks off the "30 days for 30 nights" campaign done by Covenant House Vancouver, a shelter for homeless youth, to raise money to run the shelter through December.

The gala will be held at Birks in Vancouver, and will consist of silent and live auctions, and raffle prizes.

All of the money raised by the event will go directly to Covenant House Vancouver, according to Adil H. Chagani, the event organizer.

Everything is donated "start to finish," he said. This includes the catering service, the prizes and the auction items.

"The city has been amazing... we are constantly impressed by the generosity especially in these tough economic times," Chagani said.

The event raised around $85,000 last year according to Crystal Montecalvo, a Development Officer of Individual Giving with Covenant House Vancouver.

An anonymous donor matched that amount, she said.

The event "is a great way for people to come out and support Covenant House," which is trying to alleviate youth homelessness, Montecalvo said.
