Anyone who wants a shot can get it now

By MATT KIELTYKA

If you haven't had your H1N1 vaccine yet, what are you waiting for?

Provincial health officer Dr. Perry Kendall announced that, as of Friday, all eligibility restrictions on the vaccine have been lifted.

Due to the shortage of available doses, flu clinics around the province have been turning away people who don't fall in the "at-risk" populations: Small children, people with chronic health disorders, seniors and emergency first responders.

But not anymore.

"Beginning [Friday], every British Columbian who wants the shot will be able to receive it," Kendall said. "We've encouraged them to get out and get vaccinated."

The decision to make the vaccine available to the general public came sooner than expected.

Kendall said surprisingly low turnout at flu clinics this week made the call an easy one.

"The demand this week was not as high as we anticipated," he said.

About one million people in the province, 20 per cent of the population, have received the vaccine to date.
