Snow bums revel in early winter conditions

(Carmine Marinelli, 24 Hours)

By MATT KIELTYKA

While most of us mope in the current deluge of H2O, snow hounds have risen above it all and are indulging in a winter wonderland.

All three North Shore mountains are now open and the downhill terrain is being readied for a full-blown season thanks to a generous dump of snow over the past two weeks.

That means early-season blizzard buffs have been lapping it up early.

"It's not usually open until December, so anything else is a bonus," said Sam Weston, who was tearing up Grouse Mountain's jib park yesterday. "This is nice."

Grouse spokesperson William Mbaho said terrain is gradually opening as snow fills in the rest of the runs, but it's already been a great start to an epic season.

"To be able to open two weeks into November is just great," he said. "This is going to be a very big year for us."

While Cypress gets a slew of Olympic competitions in February, Grouse will be open 24/7 during the Games and will also be the home of NBC's Today show.

And to top it off, Whistler Blackcomb has been blanketed with powder - 520 cm so far this month - giving locals their fill of skiing and snowboarding as well.
