Gov't needs to step up

B.C.'s child poverty rate: 18.8%

By DHARM MAKWANA

Government investment in childcare is the best way to help kids on the lower rungs of the economic ladder, says a member of the CUPE National Childcare Working Group.

Randi Gurholt-Seary, an early childhood educator organizing a forum on childcare efforts, says corporations are meeting the growing demand for childcare from parents who can afford the service.

However, that leaves many other children on the outside looking in.

"The private system can overtake mom-and-pop daycares in small communities, leaving them with nothing," she said.

In Vancouver, parents wait years before being accepted to a publicly funded daycare.

"Even when we build new programs, it will barely touch the waitlist," said Randi Gurholt-Seary..

A public forum on child care is set for tonight at 7 p.m. at the Vancouver Public Library.
