Red mittens can unite young Canadians in more ways than one, says the organizer of the Mitts For Kids drive.
Mary Anne Clark has taken it upon herself to deliver each child in Vancouver elementary schools a pair of red mittens branded the Olympic rings one side and a white maple leaf on the other.
"About 120 languages are spoken in Vancouver schools so there are a lot of little kids that are just finding out what it is to be Canadian and what a better way to do it then to give them a common glove and get them feeling like they're a part of this community," Clark said.
Clark spent yesterday morning handing out 40 pairs of mittens to kindergarten students at Waverly Elementary on the city's south slope.
Through $10 donations, Clark hopes to raise $259,000 to give mittens to children in kindergarten through Grade 7. A portion of the money raised will go the Hot Lunch program for inner city schools.
