Police trim their numbers for Olympic Games

By BOB MACKIN

The 2010 Winter Olympics' security force has been cut by almost 1,000.

Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit chief Bud Mercer said Thursday at the Emergency Preparedness conference that 6,000 police, 4,800 private security guards and 4,000 Canadian Forces members will be coming to Vancouver.

Another 750 police around the country will be on-call in case of illness or emergency.

Mercer told Vancouver city council in July that the force would consist of 7,000 cops, 5,000 guards and 4,500 troops.

"Do we need three people there or is one enough?" Mercer said. "I'm oversimplifying a very complex process, but as the planning matured and as the plans finalized we've been able to bring the numbers down."

He said 1,700 officers are from 118 non-RCMP forces across the country and is confident those forces are sending their top members.

"Many of these departments had lotteries to see who's coming, many of these departments used coming to 2010 as a perk rather than work," he said. "So I'm not concerned that we're getting the less desirables, so to speak."

Meanwhile, Mercer said more protests are expected on the nationwide Olympic torch relay, but wouldn't say where.

"I think it's reasonable to predict a couple more areas across the country where things will get a little more interesting," he said.

VANOC diverted and postponed part of the relay on Oct. 30 when 300 anti-Olympic protesters blocked Victoria streets.
