Time to be thankful and remember

By MICHAEL SCHRATTER

Last week's society circuit reminded me the festive month of December is almost here.

And for most of us, it is a time to celebrate family and friends, a time to share our blessings and be thankful for all we have.

But what if you had very little to celebrate?

What if December were a month of hell that reminded you of all you were missing, reminding you that you were not cocooned in the warmth of family, rather you were alone on the street.

What if you suffered all of this as a kid?

Last week Covenant House "Night of New Beginning" gala at Birks Jewelers kicked off their "30 days for 30 nights" campaign to raise enough money to cover the cost of running their shelter for the month of Decemeber.

Covenant House exists for those young people for whom there is often no one else - young people aged 16 - 24 who have either willingly fled abuse or those who have been forced from their homes.

And over the past 10 years, more than 10,000 young people have come to Covenant House Vancouver looking for shelter, food, clothing, counselling or simply a night's respite from the drudgery of the streets.
