Eby blasts VANOC and local government officials

By BOB MACKIN

The B.C. Civil Liberties Association's executive director set the tone for a raucous Thursday public forum with an open letter attacking broken Olympic promises. David Eby blasted VANOC and governments for ignoring the Inner City Inclusive Commitment Statement, undermining transparency and democracy and kowtowing to the International Olympic Committee.

Eby's abrupt exit stunned Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit chief Bud Mercer, Vancouver Police deputy chief Steve Sweeney and Vancouver Coun. Geoff Meggs.

Mercer said his biggest concerns are not protesters but instead transporting, accommodating and keeping healthy some 6,000 police officers.

Meggs said the city's Olympic bylaws won't infringe on the right to protest outside venues. "You're free to demonstrate throughout the city," Meggs said.
