'Thought leaders' to help party planning

By BOB MACKIN

No fun city festival. Burning Woman. Car-free month downtown. BBQ on the bridge. Poker tourney.

Those are just a five of the 49 ideas for a new civic celebration hatched during a May 30 brainstorming session.

Appendix A of the June 19 civic communications platform, obtained by 24 hours from the Vancouver Economic Development Commission, said the group "came up with a list of ideas for an annual event of international stature that could be announced during the Olympics."

The event would complement the Vancouver Green Capital branding and "could involve not only stellar guests but also the whole city."

Topping the list was the Vancouver Consensus: "We bring thought leaders from around the world to Vancouver, do a big roll up prep of open-source ideas, and solve one problem every year. Urban sustainability could be the focus. We use the major star power that's coming to town, such as Bono, and make him the chair of the first thought conference."
