Molson's 'cathedral to hockey'

To Jordan Bitove, it would be sacrilege to call Molson Canadian Hockey House the nation's biggest beer garden.

"What we are building here is really the cathedral to hockey," said the president of Toronto event producer Vision Companies. "We are going to do it to the highest calibre, the highest quality."

Right now, it's just an empty 62,000-square foot tent. Come Feb. 12, it will hold 3,000 people, including global hockey executives and Canada's Olympic hockey teams, and feature full food and drink service, giant high definition TV screens and a concert stage. The Barenaked Ladies, Sam Roberts and Colin James are among the acts booked.

It won't be cheap. Prices range from $495 to $995 for single-day passes to $68,000 for a 17-day box for eight people. Bitove did not have sales figures available Wednesday.

Molson Canadian Hockey House anchors the Concord Place Exposition and Activity Zone in northeast False Creek and dwarfs the neighbouring 20,000 square foot Ontario Pavilion. Quebec and Saskatchewan pavilions will be located by the seawall near a Tourism Vancouver kiosk and Concord's condo sales centre. Negotiations are continuing with parties for three other spots on the site.
