A young man who killed a newly engaged couple during a hit-and-run collision near Granville Island earlier this year has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Kurtis Rock, 19, was impaired and driving an SUV with two teen girls aboard when he ran a red light and killed Aneez Mohamed and Chanelle Morgan Feb. 7, 2009.
The couple had just gotten engaged hours before when they were struck.
Rock fled the scene and was arrested hours later.
On Friday, he received a five-year sentence for the incident, minus time served.
Mohamed was a doctor in residence with a promising career ahead of him.
Morgan was studying for a career in social work.
Rock was found to be driving at 120 km/h at the time of the collision and pleaded guilty for two counts of dangerous driving causing death and two counts of failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
Shortly after the incident, Morgan's father Christopher spoke out against drunk driving.
"They paid the ultimate price for drunk driving, and it's not fair," he told 24 hours. "Drunk driving can happen... it does happen. It has to be stopped."
