British Columbia government employees drove rental cars 7.47 million kilometres in 2008 and reported only 38 accidents.
The statistics are contained in a request for proposals by the Ministry of Citizens' Services for daily rental car services.
The total distance traveled last year in rental cars is equal to more than nine round-trips from Earth to its moon.
The estimated cost of rentals was $3.7 million for 70,600 rental days. The 38 accident claims were worth a total $12,742.67 in claims. Only two claims exceeded $1,000.
Seventy per cent of renters were government ministry employees, with the remainder being Crown Corporation and other public sector employees. Deadline for bids is Dec. 16.
