Pilot crashes into airport, but it's not what you think

By BOB MACKIN, 24 hours

A sport utility vehicle crashed into the international departures terminal at Vancouver International Airport before 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.

A black Honda Pilot driven by a male valet mounted a curb outside the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel and careened through plate glass doors, eventually stopping near the Delta Airlines check-in counter, according to an eyewitness.

"We could see this SUV coming inside the airport area where people are checking into their flights, the vehicle is spinning and sliding on the floor as it's coming towards the ticket booth," Terry Giannakos told CBC Radio in Vancouver.

Giannakos said there were pieces of glass and metal flying.

"It was quite spectacular when it was happening in real time," he said. "It was surreal."

Giannakos estimated around 150 people were waiting at airline check-in counters in the area, but miraculously no injuries.

Vancouver International Airport is the official airport of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
