A baby girl was in critical but stable condition at hospital yesterday after suffering from apparent symptoms of shaken-baby syndrome, Richmond RCMP said.
Mounties were called to investigate Tuesday when the 13-month-old child failed to wake up from an afternoon nap at the Strong Start early learning centre at Mitchell Elementary School on Cambie Road. Emergency crews rushed the child to hospital but doctors have yet to confirm a diagnosis.
The early learning centre was closed yesterday. Richmond's Serious Crime Unit is interviewing staff at the centre, the child's caregiver and her parents.
"It's going to be a process of elimination," said Cpl. Jennifer Pound.
