Lululemon cools off its 'cool sporting event' campaign

By BOB MACKIN

Cheeky Vancouver sportswear retailer Lululemon Athletica is making an about-face after its new clothing line angered VANOC, 24 hours has learned.

Lululemon public relations manager Jennifer Neziol said Friday that she "can't confirm anything," but a source said the "Cool Sporting Event that Takes Place in British Columbia Between 2009 and 2011" winter clothing line will be discontinued, renamed or relaunched.

"Since the story broke we've stopped doing media interviews with this," Neziol said. "We're reviewing it."

The long name is a sly reference to the 2010 Games and the products debuted just in time for the peak of Christmas shopping.

VANOC commercial rights manager Bill Cooper said last week that VANOC "expected better sportsmanship from a local Canadian company."

VANOC is backed by a temporary federal trademark protection law and its official clothing supplier is Hudson's Bay Company.
