A 33-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly assaulting a baby in her care, Richmond RCMP said yesterday.
Mounties said the 13-month-old victim’s caregiver was taken into custody sometime over the weekend after the child was rushed to hospital Dec. 15 for treatment of apparent shaken baby syndrome symptoms.
The child remains in serious but stable condition after losing consciousness at Strong Start early learning centre at Mitchell Elementary School on Cambie Road.
“I can’t imagine that the parents would be relieved at all,” Cpl. Jennifer Pound said of the arrest.
“They’re going to have to deal with this one day at a time I’m sure.”
The suspect has been released on a promise to appear at a court date scheduled for Jan. 28.
Crown had yet to approve aggravated assault charges by 24 hours’ presstime.
Pound would not disclose the nationality or citizenship status of the accused.
“What we need to concentrate on is that a baby has been harmed here,” she said. “We need to get to the bottom of that as opposed to specifying race.”
