Anchors aweigh on new Burrard inlet vessel

By DHARM MAKWANA

The maiden voyage of Trans- Link's newest SeaBus was a bittersweet trip for North Vancouver's mayor.

Darryl Mussatto held out hope TransLink's third SeaBus, MV Pacific Breeze, would join MV Burrard Otter and MV Burrard Beaver to increase service for passengers crossing Burrard Inlet, despite plans to return to two-ship service once the Olympics end.

"There's no doubt we're going to need three SeaBuses traveling at 10-minute intervals if we're really going to push public transit ahead for the future," the mayor said yesterday.

The Seabus Olympic schedule calls for the 395-seat catamarans to depart the north and south terminals every 10 minutes from 10 to 12:30 a.m..

After the Games TransLink will retire one of the original ships and upgrade the other if funding is available. There's potential for another SeaBus to be built to replace the retired ferry.

"It's a numbers game and it's about funding, so it's part my job to find funding so we can have three SeaBuses," Mussatto said.
