Lawsuit settled out of court

By BOB MACKIN

VANOC and the former security manager for CEO John Furlong settled a wrongful dismissal lawsuit out of court last week, 24 hours has learned.

Terms of the agreement are confidential, according to a VANOC media relations manager who declined to be identified.

Former United States Secret Service agent Steve Sierros was hired as manager of contract and special event security integration under VANOC security integration director Francesco Norante. Sierros, 49, began work July 21, 2008, but was fired March 4, 2009, without cause from his $91,800 a year job. He was given only one week's severance pay.

Sierros sued VANOC on May 1 in B.C. Supreme Court, seeking compensation for loss of salary, benefits and bonuses, moving expenses and foreign exchange loss. The statement of claim said Sierros was a "valuable and reliable employee." The June 4 VANOC defence statement contained no criticism of Sierros or his work.

Sierros' lawyer Simon Kent said "my client has not authorized me to make any comment."
