Get ready for Vancouver 2014.
The International Olympic Committee is poised to move the next Winter Olympics to Vancouver over impatience with the Sochi 2014 organizing committee.
Worries over construction schedules, security, Russia's dismal showing at Vancouver 2010 and subsequent firings of Russian Olympic committee executives are prompting IOC executives to hold an extraordinary meeting behind-closed-doors at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver at noon April 1.
The news comes amid VANOC's slow dismantling after hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
"We are aware of the IOC discussions and confident they will come to the right conclusion," said a prepared statement issued by VANOC.
"We are confident we will conclude the discussions in the best way that upholds the values and virtues of the Olympic movement and we are aware there is great interest in both Russia and Canada," said a prepared statement issued by the IOC.
"We are aware that Russia's first Winter Olympics are under sober second-thought by the IOC, but we are confident the world will come to Sochi in 2014," said a prepared statement issued by Sochi 2014.
The IOC's move to Vancouver in 2014 may anger shoppers who bought bargain high definition TVs and laptops at a Delta warehouse sale last weekend. The provincial government is preparing to offer refunds because cash-strapped VANOC will need to reuse its assets.
