No one can take away Commercial Drive’s standing as the local World Cup mecca, but a Main Street restaurant is hoping to launch a new tradition for fans of the beautiful game.
Dozen have already started to gather around the doors of The Cascade Room on Main Street near Broadway where posters show when the gastro-pub will broadcast matches for the soccer-hungry masses.
“To me, it’s the biggest sporting event,” said co-owner Nick Devine. “It outweighs the Olympics big time, especially the Winter Games, although Canada, that’s what they do.”
Devine and his business partners have prepared for the world’s biggest sporting event by creating a menu of shooters representing 16 competing countries.
“We’re a big cocktail bar here,” Devine pokes in jest. “We don’t make crappy shots, we make gourmet shots.”
To ensure gourmands don’t skip over The Cascade, the late-night spot will start opening at 7 a.m. to broadcast early-morning games starting June 23 when England takes on Slovenia.
For Englishman Devine the early hours are no bother.
“I’ve got a nanny for a month to look after the kids because I’m all about football right now.”
