Arson suspected in downtown Granville blaze
Arson is suspected in a blaze that gutted a spa and damaged two neighbouring businesses. (CARMINE MARINELLI, 24 HOURS)
At least three downtown businesses were damaged after a nail and manicure spa was hit by arson early Monday.
Firefighters believe the blaze began inside the Granville Day Spa at 1145 Granville St., but gave little detail about how it started. The spa is a tenant in a one-story commercial building containing several businesses, all of which were closed at the time.
No one was injured in the 2 a.m. fire.
"The findings (investigators) have gotten to this point lean towards arson," said fire Capt. Gabe Roder, adding investigators have ruled out any links to other arsons in Vancouver this past summer, including a string of fires around Shaughnessy.
"There is substantial fire, smoke and water damage to the initial unit, and stores on either side sustained considerable smoke damage as well," he said.
