Gas leaks shut down Burrard Street Bridge foot and cyclist traffic 0

By Michael Mui, 24 Hours Vancouver

A marina was evacuated and the Burrard Street Bridge was shutdown to pedestrian and cyclist traffic after two gas lines ruptured Thursday morning.

Vancouver fire Capt. Gabe Roder said the incident happened when a careless excavator dug into natural gas lines under the south end of the bridge.

It's unclear how much gas was released, but an explosion risk is minimal, he said.

Fortis Gas, the company responsible for the lines, had trouble shutting it off since the 11:30 a.m. burst.

The gas could be dangerous if breathed heavily or if it settles inside an underground parking lot or buildings.
