Copper theft leaves 2,800 without 911 service in Delta

By Michael Mui, 24 Hours Vancouver

A large copper wire theft in Delta early Monday has left 2,800 Telus customers in the Tilbury area without 911 service, and the outage is expected to last at least until the next morning.

Around 4 a.m. Monday, thieves stripped five separate copper wires from the 7600 block of River Road, said Telus spokesman Shawn Hall, who called the theft among the largest the company has seen.

"These thieves have left our customers without access to 911 service, they've also left our business customers without access to interacting credit card machines," he said.

Delta police Const. Ciaran Feenan said the force couldn't confirm nor deny the 911 service drop, since police haven't received reports directly from callers in the highly industrial neighbourhood.

However, he stressed police would remain around the neighbourhood "throughout the day," and residents can report emergencies directly to officers nearby.

Investigators are also looking for businesses' security camera footage of the area and witnesses.
