The provincial government ordered the B.C. Utilities Commission on Tuesday to reduce BC Hydro's rate increases by 50% over the next three years.

Although rates went up 7.1% in April of this year, starting in 2013 the average monthly bill will only rise 1.44% - or $1.20.

Total rate increases over the next three years will be about 17%.
