Volunteers join rally to save Kitsilano Coast Guard Station
A volunteer coast guard group has added its concern about the planned closure of the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station - the busiest in the country.
"We were surprised . and were not consulted, nor were we a part of any decision in this announcement," the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary-Pacific said in a statement.
Politicians, the coast guard union and a former commander warned earlier this week the closure would put lives at risk.
A Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries spokeswoman said the "government is confident that this move will not change service levels and will not compromise safety." She noted a new hovercraft coming in fall 2013 would augment Vancouver search and rescue services.
