Vancouver 2012 Homeless Count numbers released

By Michael Mui, 24 Hours Vancouver

Overall homelessness in Vancouver remained stable in the past year, according to a new report. However, the number of street homeless nearly doubled at the same time.

The 2012 Homeless Count was presented to council Tuesday, finding unsheltered street homeless jumped to 306 people from 154 last year. The overall figures remained similar, now sitting at 1,602 - 21 more than the year before.

At the same time, 131 fewer people were counted in shelters this year.

"To build on our progress and prevent an alarmingly higher number of Vancouver's homeless citizens from being forced to sleep on the street, we need significantly more provincial support for stable low-barrier shelter beds and permanent supportive housing," said Mayor Gregor Robertson in a statement.

The report noted homelessness is down 62% since 2008.
