Missing grates pose safety risk
Metal thieves have ploughed through Vancouver in the past week, stealing 47 street drain covers - each costing taxpayers $176 - in apparent belief they have high value.
The cast-iron grates allow water to flow to the drainage system while helping clear debris from roadways.
If left uncovered, the holes could pose a safety risk to motorists, pedestrians and pets, according to city officials.
The drain holes are up to 1.8-metres deep. Residents are asked to phone 311 to report missing cover locations.
