Labour unions file suit against the B.C. government
Two labour unions filed suit against the province Monday over a controversial conflict of interest amendment to an educational act passed in March.
The Federation of Post-Secondary Educators of B.C. and the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union claims a Bill 18 amendment "bans union activists from serving on college institute and university boards of governors."
The Advanced Education Statutes act was amended to "specify circumstances in which a board member elected . would be ineligible to serve," and allow the ouster of a member based on "conflict of interest" if two-thirds of members vote to remove them, among other changes.
The unions claim the act has already led to one such ouster, allegedly because the person was a union executive.
