Canadians in support of plastic-bag ban 0

By Jill Bennett, 24 Hours Vancouver

It appears Canadians would choose a full ban over paying a fee for plastic shopping bags.

A new Angus Reid poll found 58% of Canadians support a bag ban while only 53% would support a fee for the controversial containers.

Vancouver's Mayor Gregor Robertson has floated the ban idea before in his quest to make the city the greenest in the world.

Premier Christy Clark was initially cool to the idea but has since changed her mind and agreed to look at it.

B.C. residents are 60% in favour of banning plastic bags with more women open to the idea than men.

In Ontario, where Toronto City Council recently voted to ban the bags, only 54% of survey respondents supported the idea.

The online survey of 1019 Canadians was conducted earlier this month with a margin of error of +/- 3.1% 19 times out of 20.
