The B.C. Institute of Technology revealed Thursday a hacker accessed a computer server containing staff and student medical data ranging from basic contact information to patient treatment descriptions.

BCIT spokesman Dave Pinton said he doesn't believe any information was compromised after tech specialists discovered the breach June 11 during a routine security check.

"It looks like access was gained to upload and download foreign films," he said, adding a third party gained entry to the server from outside BCIT's Burnaby campus.

Pinton added about 12,500 people had information on the server, and the school is now working with the provincial privacy commissioner to ensure all security processes are current.
