Optometrists can now treat glaucoma sufferers 0
People suffering from glaucoma - when fluid pressure rises in the eyes - will have better access to treatment now local optometrists are allowed to diagnose and prescribe medications.
Patients living in rural and remote areas of the province will greatly benefit from these changes, as they will reduce health care costs, waiting times to see specialists and travel.
Five out of every 100 people over the age of 40 in British Columbia have the disease, which has no symptoms and can strike at any age.
Optometrists recommend people schedule regular eye exams so glaucoma can be detected early.
