Port Moody residents protest gang crime 0

By Michael Mui, 24 Hours Vancouver

Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay was scheduled to attend a city hall rally against criminal violence Monday evening following the "gang hit" style shooting death of a city resident over the weekend.

Joseph Allan Markel died in hospital Sept. 8 after police found him that morning shot in a Port Moody residence in the 900 block of Wallace Wynd.

It's the third targeted shooting in the community since May, and prompted community concerns, since the two previous victims are related to organized crime.

Randy Naicker, fatally shot June 25 in a parking lot, had apparent links to the Independent Soldiers. Police said Gurbinder Toor, fatally shot outside a packed recreation centre, is linked to the Dhak and Duhre groups.

"Everyone in the city, at City Hall, and in the Port Moody Police Department are deeply troubled by this activity in our community and are concerned about our residents being put at risk by such an event," Clay said in a statement.
