Meats at Costco, Walmart and Safeway are being recalled as part of an investigation by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which said over the weekend the products are potentially contaminated with E. coli.
The voluntarily recalled meats include three types of Kirkland Signature ground beef, a Costco private label product, three sizes of ground beef at Walmart and 11 types of beef patties, meatloafs, meatballs, and other products at B.C. Safeways.
Consuming E. coli, a bacteria, could result in severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, headaches and fever. Symptoms usually start within a week.
"Consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses," the CFIA said in a statement.
"Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die."
If unsure, it's recommended to cook food to an internal temperature of 74 C.
