Pedestrian walkway on Granville Bridge only an idea: city official

JIM MORRIS, 24 hours

Adding bikes lanes and a tree-lined pedestrian walkway down the middle of the Granville Bridge is only an idea and more study is needed before it even reaches the proposal stage, says a city official.

"There's a lot of ideas,'' transportation director Jerry Dobrovolony said Thursday. "Many of the ideas are feasible. Some of them are not.

"We are going to see what the implications of some of them are.''

The city has posted a proposal for an engineering feasibility study for pedestrian and cycling enhancements on the Granville and Cambie bridges. The idea was first suggested in the city's 2040 transportation plan. Issues like cost and bridge structure must be considered.

Charles Gauthier, executive director of the Downtown Vancouver Business Association, said consultation is needed.

"We're not going to sign off in support of something until we see the plan,'' he said. "It's a little disconcerting to learn about some of these proposals from the media.''
