Sun staffer faces child porn charges

By QMI Agency

A Winnipeg Sun editor is facing child pornography charges.

Mark Perry, a 22-year Sun employee, was charged earlier this month with possession of child pornography, accessing child pornography, distributing child pornography and possession of child pornography for the purposes of distribution.

"We are shocked by the charges," said Sun publisher and CEO Kevin Klein, adding Perry was suspended March 1. "We are fully co-operating with Winnipeg police."

Police said Perry, 58, was swept up in an international investigation.

According to court documents obtained this week, the arrest is linked to a Dutch National Police investigation that found a number of computer users from several countries uploading child pornography to an adult pornography and social networking website called imagefap.com.

"The website allows users to upload or download pornography to the site's database," says a police affidavit. "Users register to access service and the agreement outlines no illegal material is to be posted and any breaches will be reported to the Dutch police."

The administrators of the website received reports of users exchanging illegal material and forwar ded them to police.

The IP address of one of the users was traced to Perry's home.

Local police were alerted and reviewed 12 images uploaded from the address. They say two of those images met the criteria for child pornography.

Members of the Internet Child Exploitation unit searched Perry's St. James home on Feb. 25. Police said computers and devices used to store electronic files within the home were seized.

Perry was officially charged March 11. He's scheduled to appear in court April 26.
