Headlock controversy principal reinstated

By QMI Agency

The Halifax high school principal whom hundreds of thousands of people watched headlock a student and drag him into his office on YouTube will be back on the job.

Ken Fells is set to reclaim his former position as principal of Graham Creighton Junior High School in September, the Halifax Regional School Board announced Wednesday.

"Given his experience and knowledge of the community, we feel this is an appropriate placement," Mike Christie, the director of human resources, said in a statement.

Fells was dismissed on May 20 after Josh Boutilier, 14, alleged Fells choked him in early March.

A security video showing the scuffle between Fells and Boutilier was posted on YouTube.

Boutilier's parents say their son suffered cuts, bruises and a concussion.

Boutilier now attends another school.

The school board's staff called for Fells to be fired, but the nine elected members voted to move him to another school. They've since reversed that decision, bringing him back to his old job.

The RCMP investigated Fells, but no charges were laid.

Fells maintains he tackled Boutiller because the student was taking inappropriate pictures of a girl with his cellphone, which he refused to hand over to Fells. He said Boutiler became physical with him first.
