On a narrow cobbled street winding up to a medieval castle overlooking the Slovenian capital, Darilnica (the Gift Shop) opened this month as a place where Christmas, birthday, anniversary and gifts of any other kind, can be exchanged for something you want.

SNOOPY NAMED TOP DOG The Peanuts comic-strip character Snoopy was named the top dog in pop culture by the American Kennel Club recently as part of its 125th anniversary celebration, beating out a college sports mascot. Nearly 76,000 online voters chose their favourites from a list of pop culture dogs drawn from television, film, literature, sports and art, the kennel club said.

MAN WHO ATE ENDANGERED SPECIES SENTENCED A man who killed and ate what may have been the last wild Indochinese tiger in China was sentenced to 12 years in jail, local media reported. Kang Wannian, a villager from Mengla, Yunnan Province, met the tiger last February while gathering freshwater clams in a nature reserve near China's border with Laos.

He claimed to have killed it in self-defence.
