Prime Minister Stephen Harper has new competition in the form of
an onion ring – and the onion ring is so far the hands-down winner.
A Facebook fan page titled: “Can this Onion Ring get more fans than Stephen
Harper?” that was launched Feb. 2, features a photo of a crispy onion ring
and 144,067 fans as of Tuesday afternoon.
That compares to the 30,506 on Harper's fan page.
Facebook fan-page competitions have become the latest trend on the social
networking site.
Other examples include “Can this Mozzarella Stick get more fans than that
Onion Ring?” and “Can My Pet Earthworm Get More Fans than the Jonas
Brothers?”
Harper is not the crafty treat's first victim. It previously took on
Canadian pop star Justin Bieber in a similar Facebook campaign, beating him
2,152,536 to 1,648,758.
The Onion Ring vs. Harper page is filled with discussion about Harper's
politics, and graphs demonstrating the onion ring's increasing lead in the
popularity war.
“I would vote an onion ring into office before I vote for Stephen Harper,”
wrote Brendan Cooper from Brandon, Man. on the page's wall.
Indeed, the onion ring even seems to have an eye on the Prime Minister's
Office. Its also got a Twitter account under the handle “OnionRing4PM.”
“We're going to need some zesty dipping sauce later today!!” tweeted the
onion ring on Feb. 4, with the hashtag “CDNpoli” so that people on Twitter
interested in updates about Canadian politics would see it.
