A Southern California man is behind bars for putting a little more more than snap, crackle, pop in his wife's Rice Krispies.

Fernando Porras, 43, of Azusa, Calif., is being held on $1 million bail on suspicion of attempted murder for spiking the cereal of his 51-year-old wife, Fernanda, CBS News reported.

It's alleged Porras laced Fernanda's Thursday breakfast with a lethal amount of Goof Off, a heavy-duty stain and spot remover.

Fernanda noticed the toxic smell and taste, and was not seriously injured.

She was accompanied to hospital by her husband, who didn't return after saying he was going outside for a smoke, according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. He was arrested three kilometres away.

Porras appears in court on Tuesday.
