Militants claim responsibility for train bomb

Islamist militants on Wednesday claimed responsibility for a bombing that derailed a Russian express train, killing 26 people, and vowed further "acts of sabotage" in a letter posted on a rebel website. Friday night's attack on the luxury Nevsky Express running between Moscow and St Petersburg was the worst in Russia outside the North Caucasus in five years and raised fears of a new wave of bombings in major cities.

Great ape goes online

A 33-year-old furry photographer is winning fans on social networking website Facebook for pictures of her daily life as an orangutan in a Vienna zoo.Orangutan Nonja's photos are taken with a camera that dispenses raisins as she snaps. The orangutan has won more than 500 fans on Facebook since the zoo launched an online photo album.The Vienna Tiergarten set up the project to help keep Nonja and her three hairy ape friends entertained in their enclosure.

Catholics suffer eye damage in Ireland

Catholic pilgrims have suffered eye damage after staring at the sun in the hope of witnessing an apparition of the Virgin Mary, a doctor said yesterday. Some 10,000 people gathered at the Knock shrine in northwestern Ireland hoping to see Mary in October.
