PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - The chances of finding survivors in the rubble diminish by the hour.
Haitians use picks or hammers to break through the concrete.
Survivors stuck in the ruins of a building were asking for help on
Thursday and calling out for water. Friday morning, they could no longer
be heard. Silence dominates. The hope of men working at break-neck speed
is reduced to nothing. Men who were breaking the rock and searching the
ruins no longer have the strength. They are out of breath, destroyed
physically and morally.
After hours and hours of wandering the streets, we see the first two
operational mechanical excavators. One moves around the street. Where to
start? The other digs around in the rubble of a completely collapsed
building. Bodies are pulled out. A horrible scene.
A man who lived in Montreal for more than 30 years came to us and
explained his problem. He needs help on the ground, and quick! He is
calling out to Canadians and asks us to be there for the Haitian people.
He cries as he talks about his children in Montreal with whom he cannot
communicate.
