We might be watching Twitter, but a new study suggests most of us are
wallflowers on the popular social networking site.
Twitter now boasts about 19 million accounts, but according to a new study
from security firm Barracuda Labs, few are actually using them.
The research, which broke down Twitter activity, suggests the 50 million
daily tweets are coming from a minority of the accounts - with only 21%
listed in the study as “active users.”
These are defined as users who have at least 10 followers, who follow at
least 10 people, and have tweeted at least 10 times.
Most Twitter users (51%) follow fewer than five people, and 20%
aren't following any other accounts at all.
The study also says 34% of users have never tweeted from their accounts.
Only 27% of users have tweeted at least 10 times.
The site's growth continues to skyrocket. According to a Twitter blog posted
in February, there were 5,000 tweets a day in 2007. By 2008, that number was
300,000, and by 2009 it had grown to 2.5 million per day.
There's now an average of 600 tweets per second.
